“The Boondocks” and Aaron McGruder

I just read today in the Daily Collegian, the local campus published newspaper, that Aaron McGruder has decided to take a six month hiatus from his comic strip. The comic itself has been in print for a few years now, but I’ve just recently discovered it (I know! I’m sooo slow!). This actually gives me a chance to catch up on some older strips, sort of like repeats on TV. Which is an excellent segway into the actual show. Like many other college youths, my day is pretty much dependent on the fact that I will be able to watch [adult swim] at night. Without, I don’t function right the next day. Something about “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law,” “Futurama,” etc., makes me feel all warm inside. McGruder’s strip has now been recreated in the world of television. The first season I believe is 15 episodes, with the 13th airing this Sunday. I’m going to assume all 15 episodes have already been created and won’t be affected by his sabbatical. I’ve really enjoyed the series so far, even though I’m white, which shouldn’t really matter to begin with. My favorite has been the episodes involving Samuel Jackson as a guest star. The scene in the car with Huey and Riley recreates my favorite scene from Pulp Fiction. You know, the one that goes:

Jules: What does Marcellus Wallace look like?
Brett: What?
Jules: What country you from?
Brett: What?
Jules: What ain’t no country I ever heard of! They speak English in What?
Brett: What?
Jules: ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER! DO-YOU-SPEAK-IT?

Haha… wow, good times. Anyway, Cartoon Network and [as] have decided to pick “The Boondocks” up for atleast another 20 episodes, despite all the negative publicity it’s been getting due in large part to the Reverend Al Sharpton. Give it a rest, Al, it’s a great show and probably does more good than you realize. I think it’s even got a nomination for an award of some part at the NAACP’s Image Awards show. I hope Aaron enjoys his time off and comes back with some great stuff. I look forward to more.
