One Pill at a Time
If you’ve ever read Brave New World you’ve seen some startling similarities developing in our country. If you haven’t read it, there is a substance called “soma” that every person in the world takes to become complacent with where they are and enjoy their mediocre lives. With depression and ADD diagnoses being handed out like roofies at frat houses, we’re becoming a nation more dependent on drugs than ever. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of drugs that help a lot of people. But most drugs people take don’t ever cure the illness they have, it only helps them live with it. The problem is that most people, and more importatnly, the drug manufacturers, are completely satisfied with drugs that only make you feel better on a day-to-day basis. There are kids out there that are two to three medications a day. One pill to take care of the ADHD and an upper to counter the depressive effects of the other pill. Some kids are selling their pills to others they go to school with to take as many as you can and get some kind of high (I’ve seen it). Our government is fighting a war on illegal drugs when the legal ones are becoming the bigger problem. Unfortunately, I only see the problem getting worse as another dozen new downers and uppers roll from development to be sold.
